The Medline SelectSilicone 2-Way Foley Catheter is a sterile indwelling
urinary catheter designed for medium to long-term catheterization. Made
from 100% silicone rather than latex or latex-coated materials, this
catheter is ideal for patients with latex allergies, sensitivities, or
those requiring extended catheter use where silicone offers significant
advantages over latex.

The 2-way design includes one channel for urine drainage and a second
channel for balloon inflation. Once inserted, the 10 cc balloon is
inflated with sterile water to hold the catheter securely in the
bladder. The catheter connects to a standard urinary drainage bag or
night bag for continuous urine collection.

Why 100% Silicone Matters:

Silicone catheters offer significant clinical advantages over latex
options. Silicone resists encrustation from urinary salts, which means
the catheter stays clearer longer between changes. The material also
allows for larger internal drainage diameter compared to latex
catheters of the same French size, which reduces blockage risk during
extended use. For patients requiring long-term catheterization,
silicone catheters can typically stay in place for up to 4-12 weeks
depending on the clinical situation, compared to shorter recommended
wear times for latex catheters.

100% silicone construction is also the correct choice for any patient
with confirmed or suspected latex allergy. Even "silicone-coated" latex
catheters can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive patients — the
Medline SelectSilicone contains no latex materials whatsoever.

Who Uses This Catheter:

This catheter is used by home care nurses managing patients with
long-term catheterization needs. Patients with urinary retention,
post-surgical catheter needs, neurogenic bladder, palliative care
situations, and other conditions requiring indwelling catheterization
benefit from the extended wear time. Home care nurses, hospice teams,
and family caregivers trained in catheter care all use this product.

Vancouver home care nurses frequently choose 100% silicone catheters
for patients requiring extended catheter wear because it reduces the
number of catheter changes needed, which reduces trauma to the urethra
and lowers infection risk from repeated insertions.

Understanding the Specifications:

The 16 French (Fr) size refers to the catheter's outer diameter.
French sizing measures approximately 0.33 mm per unit, making a 16 Fr
catheter about 5.3 mm in diameter. This is a common adult size
appropriate for most adult male and female patients. Your healthcare
provider selects the French size based on patient anatomy, drainage
needs, and clinical situation.

The 10 cc balloon capacity is the standard adult size for indwelling
catheters. The balloon is inflated with 10 cc of sterile water —
never air, and never saline — after the catheter is properly
positioned in the bladder. This size balloon secures the catheter
without causing bladder irritation from oversized balloons.

Important Clinical Notes:

Foley catheters are a prescription medical device intended for use by
trained healthcare professionals or trained caregivers. Improper
insertion can cause urethral trauma, bladder damage, or serious
infections. This product is not intended for self-catheterization or
first-time use without proper training.

Home care patients using indwelling catheters should have regular
follow-up with their physician, urologist, or home care nursing team.
Any signs of infection (fever, cloudy urine, foul odor, blood in
urine, pain) require prompt medical evaluation. Catheter changes
should be performed by trained personnel using sterile technique.
