Medi Travel Calf compression socks are engineered specifically for long-haul flights, road trips, and extended travel where sitting for hours increases the risk of leg swelling and deep vein thrombosis. The 18-20 mmHg compression range is the internationally recommended pressure level for travel compression — strong enough to reduce venous stasis during flights, gentle enough for comfortable all-day wear during and after travel. Made by medi, the German medical compression brand trusted by clinicians worldwide.

Available in separate designs for men and women. Select your gender and size from the variant menu above. Both versions use the same CoolMax fabric technology and 18-20 mmHg compression profile, with gender-specific styling and color options.

Vancouver travelers flying from YVR to Asia, Europe, or Australia rely on Medi Travel for the 8-14+ hour journeys where DVT risk becomes clinically significant. Cruise passengers boarding at Canada Place terminal wear these socks during long ocean voyages. Business travelers with frequent short flights use them for daily protection during work trips.

Why 18-20 mmHg Is the Travel Standard

Travel compression sits at a specific pressure range for good reason. Lower pressures (below 15 mmHg) provide minimal circulation benefit and mostly a psychological effect. Higher medical compression (20-30 or 30-40 mmHg) requires physician assessment and can be uncomfortable for extended casual wear. The 18-20 mmHg range delivers genuine clinical benefit for DVT prevention without requiring a prescription or professional fitting appointment.

Aviation medicine research shows that graduated compression at this pressure level significantly reduces the risk of symptomless calf blood clots during long-haul flights. The compression maintains venous return when your leg muscles cannot pump blood back to the heart during hours of sitting.

Who Uses Medi Travel

Long-haul flight passengers between Vancouver and Asia, Europe, or Australia use Medi Travel for flights over 4 hours. Business travelers with frequent short flights wear them daily during travel weeks. Vancouver cruise passengers boarding Alaska sailings from Canada Place wear them during embarkation and long days at sea. Road trip travelers on 8+ hour drives benefit from compression during extended sitting.

Adults with mild venous insufficiency, occasional leg swelling, or family history of DVT wear travel compression as everyday prevention. Pregnant travelers use them during flights and long car trips with physician approval. Post-surgical patients travel with compression during the increased DVT risk window following major surgery.

Not the Same as Medical-Grade Compression

Medi Travel is preventive compression for travel and daily use. It is not a substitute for the 20-30 mmHg or 30-40 mmHg medical compression prescribed for varicose veins, post-thrombotic syndrome, chronic venous insufficiency, or active DVT treatment. If you have a diagnosed venous condition, discuss the appropriate compression level with your physician — you likely need stronger compression than Medi Travel provides.

Design and Comfort Features

The lightweight knit uses breathable fibers that stay comfortable during long flights in dry cabin air. Medi’s proprietary compression knitting produces true graduated pressure — firm at the ankle, gradually reducing up the calf. This gradient is what makes graduated compression effective, and cheaper travel socks often lack this precise pressure profile.

The comfortable top hem sits below the knee without cutting into the leg during extended wear. The reinforced heel and toe zones prevent wear during travel days that include walking through airports, standing in customs lines, and long taxi rides at destination.

The men’s version features masculine color options and a slightly wider foot cut. The women’s version offers a broader color palette and a slimmer foot profile. Both deliver identical clinical compression performance.

Sizing

Medi Travel sizing depends on ankle circumference and calf circumference, not shoe size alone. Yaletown Medical Supplies measures both dimensions during in-store fitting.

Men and women use separate size charts. Select the Men or Women variant from the menu above, then choose your size. Visit our store before your trip for professional measurement. Wrong sizing produces socks that either provide no compression (too loose) or cut circulation (too tight). Neither is safe or effective during long flights.

How to Wear During Travel

Put the socks on before you leave for the airport, or as soon as you settle into your seat. Wear them throughout the flight and for a few hours after landing. Remove them once you reach your hotel or destination and elevate your legs briefly to complete the circulation reset.

For flights over 12 hours, some travelers pack a second pair to change into mid-flight for refreshed compression. Never leave compression socks on for more than 24 hours continuously without removing to check skin condition.

Care Instructions

Machine wash cold in a mesh laundry bag on the delicate cycle with mild detergent. Air dry only — heat from the dryer damages the elastic fibers that create the compression. Do not iron, bleach, or dry clean. Replace every 6 months with regular use as compression fades gradually through washing cycles.

Important Notes

Consult your physician before starting compression therapy if you have diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, congestive heart failure, or existing circulation concerns. Some conditions require specific compression levels or medical supervision. If your feet feel numb, cold, or tingling during wear, remove the socks immediately and re-check sizing.
