The Drive Folding Blind Cane is a white cane for people with vision loss. Its four sections fold down small enough to carry in a bag.

Drive Folding Blind Cane in Vancouver

Drive Medical builds this folding cane, model 10352-1, from high-quality aluminium. White and red reflective tape covers the shaft for better visibility at night. The cane measures 45 and three-quarter inches, or about 116 cm, when open. A wrist strap keeps the cane close if you let go to open a door. The reinforced nylon tip slides and taps along the ground and resists wear. Drive backs this folding cane with a limited lifetime warranty.

How a White Cane Helps

A white cane tells people nearby that the user has little or no vision. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians can then give the user more space and time. Canada's Council of the Blind calls the red-based white cane the best-known design. A longer cane also gives information about the ground ahead of each step. It can reveal curbs, stairs, poles, and changes in the walking surface.

Types of White Canes

The Canadian Council of the Blind describes four main types of white cane. An identification cane is short and light, and it mainly signals low vision to others. A guide cane reaches about waist height and checks the ground one step ahead. A long cane, or mobility cane, scans about two steps ahead and suits independent travel. Long canes often use a rolling or marshmallow tip instead of a small nylon tip. A support cane bears body weight and usually does not fold.

Choosing the Right Cane Length

The Canadian Council of the Blind says long cane length depends on the user's height. Traditionally, a long cane stands as tall as the user's breastbone. Stand straight in your shoes, and measure upward to your breastbone. Compare that number with this cane's fixed length of about 116 cm. A cane shorter than that range warns you of obstacles later. Taller users may need a longer cane or one cut to their height.

White Cane Training and Safe Use

Henshaws, a UK sight loss charity, stresses that cane training is essential. A guide cane or long cane works best after lessons with a mobility specialist. Ask your eye doctor or a vision loss charity about orientation and mobility training. Practise in quiet, familiar places before you travel on busy streets. Keep the wrist strap on in crowds, so the cane stays with you if bumped. Check the tip often, and replace it when the nylon wears down or cracks.

Not a Support Cane

This folding white cane is not designed to carry your body weight. Do not lean on it for balance or use it to help you stand up. People with both vision loss and balance problems need a dedicated support cane. Our walking canes collection includes folding, offset, and quad canes for balance support. Our guide to choosing a cane explains which walking cane style suits which need.

Folding and Caring for the Cane

Open and fold the four aluminium sections as the Drive instructions show. Folded sections sit side by side, and the wrist strap can hold them together. A gentle wipe with a moist cloth keeps the reflective tape bright. Replace the cane if a section bends, since a bent shaft affects accuracy.
